Although Jasmine V. hasn’t released her own record yet, the pop singer has already toured the world with Justin Bieber

How will your new album compare to your previous singles?
Like my mixtape, the new music is going to be relatable. A lot of my fans are really young, and I’m gonna keep it that way. But I’m older, so it’s going to be a lot more edgy. She Believed was about about heartbreak. This is about having fun and basically getting over love. I’m at a point where I’m single, so I’m independent and I’m working. It’ll be about girl power.

Who, in the music industry, represents girl power well?
Alicia Keys and Beyoncé are doing it perfectly. Alicia Keys is my idol, and I love Beyoncé and everything she does—she’s a triple threat.

Is acting something you’d like to spend more time doing?
I started off with modeling first, and did a little acting while trying to be a singer. It’s hard to choose a favorite. I like going back and forth, doing both—I’m working on my album, but I definitely do want to pursue acting.

Is music something you’ve always been passionate about?
Definitely. Both sides of my family are really into music, so growing up, it was always around. I couldn’t get away from music! I didn’t know I could make a career out of it, but I took that chance.

Who would you most like to collaborate with in the future?
I would love to work with Alicia Keys and Trey Songz. He’s amazing! Rihanna‘s really cool and edgy, and I love her music.

You played Justin Bieber’s crush in the music video for “Baby.” Are you still friends?
Oh yeah, definitely! I’m very supportive and I’m proud of everything he’s doing. He’s come a major long way since the debut video!

One thing people might not know about you is just how many music videos you’ve appeared in, from “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West to “My Girl” (Remix) by Mindless Behavior. What’s been the coolest?
Kanye West’s shoot had a really good vibe. It was one of my first music videos and I was only 11—really, really young! I played an angel and I thought it was so cool. It was a totally new experience for me.

What music are you listening to on repeat?
I’m really, really in love with the Justin Timberlake album. I think it’s amazing!

What are you up to this summer?
I’m going to be working out a lot more because it’s summer and I want to go to the beach. I’ll be recording my album, which should be out by the end of the year. And I just want to start touring again, so I’m going to be working really hard on putting my music out there.

Artist of the Week: Jasmine Villegas

  by: John Howard

Today we turn our attention to Jasmine Villegas, or Jasmine V for short…

A quick Google search will reveal a gorgeous face, but don’t be fooled. She’s got the vocal presence to convince any skeptics of her abilities.

Jasmine has roots in big pop names. Her big break happened when she was featured in Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video. She later joined the crooner for the 32-city stretch that was the My World Tour.

Half Mexican, half Filipino, a message on Jasmine’s website properly describes her as “dynamic, stunning, and powerful.” That’s no surprise, though. She’s been honing her craft since the age of four, when she would regularly perform at family functions.

In 2012, with the help of sponsors Microsoft and Sephora, she released her first music video for her single “Didn’t Mean It,” which rose to No. 1 for two weeks on MTV.com.

But Jasmine isn’t selling fluff. As is obvious in the opening scene, “Didn’t Mean It” focuses on domestic violence awareness.

“Everybody has a story, this is part of my story and it has made me who I am,” a message from Jasmine reads before the video. “Never feel embarrassed or ashamed of any trials you’ve endured. Grow from it and never look back. You are not alone.”

Currently, she’s working on her first studio album. Check out her mixtape s(he) be(lie)ved:

Austin Mahone hung out with pop singer Jasmine Villegas!

Can Austin Mahone and Jasmine Villegas PLEASE date?

The often-hazy landscape of young pop star love suddenly makes sense! After all, the super buff  Austin Mahone is being hailed as the next Justin Bieber. And since Justin Bieber used to smooch Jasmine Villegas in his “Baby” video, we’re connecting the dots here, and, wait… we’ve entered the pop star vortex and may need the help of Keanu Reeves to get out.

Read more about Austin Mahone and Jasmine Villegas after the jump.

Earlier today, the Harlem Shake-loving 16-year-old Instagramed a photo of himself and Jasmine along with the caption “Met the beautiful @JasmineVillegas.” And sure, while calling someone beautiful doesn’t necessarily mean you wanna play tonsil hockey with them, we wouldn’t blame the “Say You’re Just A Friend” crooner for having the hots for the 19-year-old “Paint A Smile” chanteuse! I mean, it makes perfect sense — both singers are hardworking hustlers. And they’re both super attractive. Granted, Jasmine is three years older than Austin, but hey, my mom is seven years older than my dad, and they’re still lovey-dovey to this day. On the other hand, neither Austin or Jasmine is over 21, so maybe give it a few years. Or don’t. We’ll support you either way.

Jasmine V Sings “Paint a Smile” Live and Shares The Personal Stories Behind Her Lyrics

Written By:

February 7, 2013

R&B star Jasmine Villegas first rose to fame as the girlfriend in Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video (as well as his real-life significant other at the time.) But since then, she’s become a massively popular singer, actress and model in her own right, releasing the hit tracks “Didn’t Mean It” and “Paint a Smile” to an appreciative audience. (She was first signed by Damon Dash to Sony Music at age 16!)

Now Jasmine performs her latest single, “Paint a Smile,” live at the What’s Trending studio and chats with Shira Lazar, Chris Thompson, and her dedicated Jasminators about the personal stories behind her songs and what’s in store for an exciting 2013. Considering Jasmine’s enthusiasm for engaging with fans through social media, we also challenge her to decipher some of her silliest and most profound tweets!

Following up from last summer’s “Didn’t Mean It” music video, Jasmine recently released a brand new video for her latest single, “Paint a Smile.” The two tell a continuous story with a very personal meaning for Jasmine, who reveals that, as portrayed in these videos, she had been in a domestic violence relationship.

“You can never really know the stats of how much goes on because a lot of people don’t talk about it,” she says. “When I got out of it – thank God – I made the video [...] and that was to help people that I know that might be going through it soon or have gone through it or are still in it.” She also partnered up with a domestic violence hotline (the calls increased by 50%) and Cover Girl to help spread a positive message and empower women.

“When I was in my situation, I kept my mouth shut. I never told anybody,” she reveals. “The fact that I could be that voice for young girls is amazing.”
